Conrad’s spiritual journey into darkest Africa is based on his own experience in the Congo at the end of the 19th century. Marlow, the narrator, is torn between revulsion for and attraction towards colonialism but is driven onwards by an overwhelming desire to meet the mysterious Kurtz.
